Scalar Implicature
A principle in pragmatics that explains how humans make inferences, given utterances in conversation.
1 Example
If I give some weak statement, then the listener can assume that none of the stronger versions of the statements hold, otherwise I would have said so. So, if I say "five of us will come to dinner", you can assume that it is not the case that more than five people will come to dinner.
